• Introduction to Phased Array Ultrasonics

As per PCN 24/GEN:

• Training: 50 hours of approved PAUT Level 1 training.
• Work Experience: Minimum 1 months supervised PAUT experience (before the exam or within 12 months of passing).

Certification: Awarded upon successful completion of training, examination, and supervised work experience within 12 months.

Important Note: A valid near vision and colour perception eye test is mandatory before sitting the exam.

Examinations for PAUT Level 1 follow the PCN certification scheme.

The Level 1 examination consists of:

• General Theory Paper
  • Basics of phased array technology
  • Wave propagation and beam steering principles
  • Instrumentation and couplants
  • Calibration checks
  • Image display formats (A-scan, S-scan, B-scan)
  • Safety in PAUT
• Specific Theory Paper
  • Application of PAUT to welds, forgings, castings
  • Use of codes, specifications, and procedures
  • Control checks and documentation requirements
• Practical Examination
  • Calibrate phased array equipment with reference blocks
  • Perform supervised PAUT inspections
  • Record and report results accurately
  • Follow written instructions provided by a Level 2/3
  • Not responsible for choosing techniques or making final acceptance decisions
