As per PCN 24/GEN:

• Training: 40 hours of approved training prior to the examination.
• Work Experience: Minimum of 3 months of supervised experience, which may be completed before the exam or within 12 months after passing.

Certification:
Upon successful completion of the required training, passing the PCN examination, and fulfilling the supervised work experience within 12 months, PCN certification in Surface Eddy Current Testing will be issued.

The Level 1 examination consists of the following sections:

General Theory Paper

Covers the basic principles and knowledge required for Eddy Current Testing, including:

Basic electrical theory (inductance, impedance, and electromagnetic fields)

Principles of eddy current generation and detection

Equipment components and calibration

Effects of test variables (frequency, lift-off, fill factor, conductivity, permeability)

Signal interpretation and influencing factors

Types of probes and their applications

Safety precautions in ET

Relevant standards and codes

Specific Theory Paper

The specific paper includes questions related to:

Written procedures and instructions

Product technology and surface applications

Calibration and control checks

Codes, standards, and specifications applicable to ET

Identification of discontinuities typical of surface ET applications

Practical Examination

Candidates must:

Carry out surface Eddy Current Testing under supervision

Follow written instructions provided by a Level 2 or Level 3

Use ET equipment correctly and safely

Record and report test results accurately

Not select the technique or make final acceptance decisions against codes or standards
